Back to His Roots: Joe Seawell Leads the Chatham Yardbirds with Purpose and Passion
For Joe Seawell, leading the Chatham Yardbirds isn’t just another coaching opportunity; it’s personal.
Born and raised in Chatham County, Seawell’s journey in baseball began on the same fields that now surround the Yardbirds organization. He grew up playing in West Chatham, competing in Legion ball through high school before taking his talents to the next level. Baseball carried him to the NJCAA at Wilkes Community College and eventually to Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida, where he was part of a dominant pitching staff that captured back-to-back National Championships.
That chapter at Southeastern didn’t just shape his athletic career; it changed his life. It was there he met his wife, Kristina. Two decades later, and now parents to nine sons, Kristina remains his biggest supporter both on and off the diamond.
Together, the Seawells run successful businesses and founded a local baseball program for middle and high school homeschool athletes, which is entering its fourth season. Pouring into young players has become more than a calling, it’s part of their family’s mission.
When asked what representing the Chatham Yardbirds means to him, Seawell’s passion for mentorship is clear.
“I've loved coaching since I had to step across the lines from player to mentor after college,” he said. “From 4-year-old boys to grown men, a baseball field is a special place. As a coach and lover of this game, being able to bring a little more baseball to the area and create more opportunities for local athletes during the summer is an incredible role to play.”
For Seawell, this opportunity is about more than filling out a lineup card. It’s about culture.
“Building something new is never easy,” he said. “It's always nice to be handed a ready-made team or program, but everything has a beginning. Success for me looks like a team that evolves from strangers to brothers over the summer, and that want to come do it again in 2027.”
That kind of brotherhood, he believes, is what makes baseball special — not just to play, but to watch. Establishing that foundation now will set the Yardbirds up for long-term success and sustainability.
What excites him most, however, is the opportunity to make a lasting impact.
“Not often in life do we have an opportunity to have the ear and attention of this many young men in one setting,” Seawell said. “I remember every coach who gave of their time and energy to pour into my own personal life and career, which ultimately helped mold me into who I am today. I'm very excited about this chance to have a positive impact on these young men and see them through these exciting days of summer ball as they continue their journey on the diamond.”
Beyond wins and losses, Seawell has a bigger vision for what the Chatham Yardbirds will represent.
He often sees his sons standing along a fence, watching an older player compete and dreaming of the day they’ll be on the field themselves. That image fuels his mission.
“These college players, local or from abroad, represent the dream for so many young baseball players in the local community,” he said. “I want to see the next generation of baseball players from all over Chatham County lined up on our fences, dreaming of being on the field one day as a college athlete and hopefully growing their love of the game.”
For Joe Seawell, leading the Yardbirds is about legacy, honoring the coaches who shaped him, building a brotherhood among his players, and inspiring the next wave of athletes across Chatham County.
This summer, the fences won’t just hold spectators. They’ll hold dreams.
